Assumptions

This applet is not a peer-reviewed research tool. It is merely an adaptation and visualization of the data collected and published here:

Dore, J.E., R. Lukas, D.W. Sadler, M.J. Church, and D.M. Karl. 2009. Physical and biogeochemical modulation of ocean acidification in the central North Pacific. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 106:12235-12240.

Atmospheric CO2 and pH levels have an error of 0.03 ppm and 0.0002 pH units respectively, per year.

The difference between "Measured" and "Proxy" pH is that "Measured pH" is based on a direct measurement of pH, whereas "Proxy pH" is proxy data based on measurments of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon levels. Both measurements of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon levels. Both measurements were taken from the surface ocean just north of Hawaii; both are comsidered accurate.
